This is why I try to avoid, or at least limit, my meat consumption.

The president of a slaughterhouse at the heart of the largest meat recall denied under oath on Wednesday, but then grudgingly admitted, that his company had apparently introduced sick cows into the hamburger supply.

Seriously, who are you supposed to trust when it comes to food safety?  There were over 50 recalls last year alone. Here are some links to sites that list recalls:

You work your own butt off for years, building a solid reputation, creating a squeaky clean image, only to throw it all away for a piece of ass.

In summary: 

Over time, a much lower US standard of living and a significantly devalued US dollar will make it much cheaper to manufacture in the US again, and 15-25 years from now our massive debt loads will have subsided and all those outsourced jobs will eventually come back home. Then we will be able to do more than sell each other cheaply manufactured goods…

Ultimately, the US dollar will plummet in value and its fate as the defacto World Reserve Currency could soon be brought to question — but that might be part of our monetary policy master’s “master-plan” anyway, as it will allow the Amero to slip right into its place without an American revolt.

Great. Along the lines of my earlier post about pesticides and perchlorate in everyday foods, here we read about traces of pharmaceuticals in our drinking water.

Though barely measurable, these pharmaceuticals are present in a variety worthy of a medicine cabinet: drugs for aches, infections, seizures and high blood pressure; hormones for menopause; the active ingredient in a popular sedative; and caffeine — all bound for the city that never sleeps.

As TimesOnline reports, slowly, rioting over food shortages and higher prices has begun.

Population pressure and increased wealth are mainly to blame for the resurgence of food insecurity. More people are eating meat and dairy products in Asia, which increases the demand on the animal-feed industry.

They also talk about how biofuels is threatening world food production.

And in The Star:

Peter Brabeck, CEO of Nestlé SA, the world’s largest food company, foresees a struggle between the food and biofuel industries over arable land as fresh water supplies diminish.

“We will not find sufficient water to produce all the crops,” Brabeck said while reporting his firm’s financial results last week. “There will be a fierce fight for arable land.”

Arable-land acreage is indeed shrinking, even factoring out its conversion to production of fuel feedstock. Several million hectares of farmland disappear each year, as growing economies convert it into residential subdivisions and industrial parks. Declining fresh-water supplies further diminish the amount of land available for farming.
