This MAY (small chance) work in theory, but it will not work in practice. First of all, some people do not have the luxury of choosing which gas company to purchase product from, unless they want to drive a very long distance. But the main problem is that many other gas companies purchase oil from Exxon-Mobile, not pumping it themselves so they don't have a say in prices for the most part; Furthermore, even if they did have price control and people bought from everyone but Exxon-Mobile, then the result would just be that Exxon would have to significantly reduce prices... but when people start buying the gas again, they will just start drastically raising the price. Sure, maybe for a few days some people would only pay a dollar or so less per gallon, but for all the effort, the rewards are not so bountiful.

I highly doubt this would work, and also do not believe that it was an idea actually put out by a former Coca-Cola executive...he would have to be the most ignorant exec ever, but that's just my opinion.
